Abstract

Study regarding the effect of plasma exposure on the contact angle and the penetrating strength of the silicone rubber insulation material has been carried out.. Measurements were made on a sample with a thickness of 1 mm. Each sample with a size of 5 x 5 cm. The surface of the sample is treated by giving exposure to plasma produced from DHF which is given pure oxygen. The plasma is exposed to the surface of the sample for varying times, from 10 to 100 seconds. Immediately after the sample is exposed, it is followed by measuring the contact angle by dripping distilled water using an injection with a size of 23G on the surface of the sample. The contact angle was observed and measured with a sensitive digital microscope with a camera connected to a computer and using the motic image plus 2.0 application. The average values obtained for exposure time of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 seconds were 103.7 °, 104.7 °, 105.9 °, 107.5 °, 107.5, respectively. °, 107.7 °, 107.8 °, 108.1 °, 108.8 ° and 112.8 °. The PDIV value measured by the application of HVAC on the electrode system shows a tendency to increase along with the increasing of the contact angle. Likewise, the breakdown voltage increases with increasing exposure time and contact angle. These results indicate that plasma exposure has an effect on the surface condition of the SiR sample which becomes smoother because the pores on the surface are smaller, so that the water-repelling (hydrophobic) properties of the material have increased.
