Abstract

This study investigates the life of sticky choir in Batai Village, Gumay Talang District, Lahat Regency, South Sumatra. It Aims to analyze the background of working as a stick singer that seen from daily life and daily activities carried out by the stick singer. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research method. Data collectionused observation, interviews, and documentation with ethnometodology research strategies. The number of informants in this study were 12 people, the determination pf the informants in this study was purposive. This research uses the ethnometodology theory from garfinkel. The results of the study found that; firstly, the background of working as a stick singer including: the influence of daily interactions from friends, family, and also the neighborhood, low levels of education led to choose to work as a stick singer, the middle-low economy and do not have a permanent job, and the existence of a single organ tradition at major events (weddings, circumcision, campaigns and others). secondly, the daily life of stick singers on gigs and non-gigs including: on gigs, sexy performers (clothes, makeup, wobble or movements), and perform activities such as going and going back on stage, dancing, seducing, holding bodies, having sex, the treatment of the audience and get payment. Furthermore, when it is not performing, the singer chooses ordinary clothes, both clothes and makeup, and performs activities such as cooking, cleaning the house, taking care of children, and having relationships with family and community.
