Abstract
Drugs are psychoactive substances that affect the brain function. People who are addicted to drugs will experience changes in drug seeking behavior and drug consumption that will lead to harmful behavior. The prevalence of drug users in Palembang in 2018 is 1,77% with 3 vulnerable areas, there are Lubuk Linggau City, Musi Rawas Regency, and Palembang City. The rate of drug users are increased due to risk factors, including smoking and alcohol consumption. Smoking will produce carbon monoxide, and if it found in the lung with large amount then it can lead toxication and health problem. The aim of this study was to determine the determinant of expiratory CO (carbon monoxide) levels on drugs user in Palembang City. This research was a quantitative study using a cross sectional study design. The sampling technique in this study used purposive sampling. The sample in this study was 68 drug users who smoking and staying in the rehabilitation center. Bivariate analyze from this study used Chi-square test and multivariate analyze used binary logistic test. Bivariate results showed that there was a significnt relationship between income (p=0,000), type of substance (p=0.007), amount of cigarettes (p=0,000), and the way smoke of cigarattes (p=0.032) with expiratory CO levels in drug users in Palembang. Multivariate results showed that amount of cigarettes variable are the most dominant factor affect to CO levels in drug users in Palembang City after have controlled for confounding variables with PR 1,909 (95%CI= 1,122 – 3,247), meaning that drug users with 10 amount of cigarettes 1,909 times more likely to have high-risk expiratory CO levels. For this reason, there have to be monitoring and counseling that can minimize cigarette consumption, relapse preventing, and strengthening family supervision for post rehabilitation to support stop smoking program for drug users.
