Abstract

Soil is one of important materials of construction, either it is building or road construction. But there are several types of soil that could not be directly used as the basic layer because of the low physical properties. There are many techniques to improve the strength of the soil especially increasing the bearing capacity. This research will focus on deep soil mixing technique as ground improvement works for clay soil. The materials used as the mixture of the deep mixing column are clay + 3% of calcium carbide residue (CCR). The column size varies in diameter of 8, 10, 12 cm, and the length of 60, 67, and 75 cm. The results obtained from this research are ultimate bearing capacity (qu) and BCR value. The ultimate bearing capacity of the soil before being improved is 26,22 kN/m2. After being reinforced with DSM technique, the highest ultimate bearing capacity reached 40,89 kN/m2 in the variety of 12 cm diameter and 75 cm length with 56% increasing percentage of BCR value. The lowest ultimate bearing capacity reached 33,33 kN/m2 in the variety of 8 cm diameter and 75 cm length with 27% increasing percentage of BCR value.
