Abstract

Every plant species have their own unique form that different from others. This variety of forms is determined by the genetic program. This various forms or appearances can be analysed using plant architecture approach. Tembesu (F. fragrans) is one of the native plant species that composes natural vegetation in the environtment in this case, South Sumatra. Architectural analysis is applied to study the growth pattern and framework of the shape of tembesu aerial structure. The research was conducted in May until June 2019 in the Sriwijaya University campus area, Indralaya. Qualitative observations were carried out on tembesu (F. fragrans) individuals in various phases of development, i.e. seedlings, juveniles or sapling, and adults trees, in the field with around five individuals in each phases of development. Architectural analysis is then carried out by observing a number of morphological characters shown by the individuals that define their architecture. The results of the observation on individuals in each phases of development show that F. fragrans has monopodial trunk construction and continuous growth with orthotropy orientation while the branching is sympodial and rhythmic with plagiotropy by apposition in orientation. The reproductive structure in the adult phase develop on the lateral position which indicates the indeterminate growth capacity of the axis. The architectural characters of F. fragrans show that this plant belong to trees that correspond to Aubreville architectural model.
