Abstract

Background: Candida albicans is a commensal organism in the oral cavity that can change into pathogenic state under certain conditions. Nowadays, the natural substance becomes an alternative which can be used in order to make a new antifungal. Snakehead fish oil extracts have been reported to contain Omega-3 and Omega-6 unsaturated fatty acids which have antifungal potential. Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the antifungal activity of snakehead fish oil against C. albicans. Method: The present study was an in vitro laboratory research with post-test control group design. Snakehead fish oil extract is obtained through the wet rendering method to get the crude fish oil. Antifungal activity test of snakehead fish oil against C. albicans was conducted using microdilution method to determine Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC), as well as using the disc-diffusion method to determine the zone of inhibition. This study used snakehead fish oil with concentrations of 0,062-32 μl/ml for the microdilution test and 2-32 μl/ml for the disc-diffusion test. The positive control used was nystatin (100 μg/ml). Results: The results showed that there were visible growths in all concentrations of snakehead fish oil extract and no inhibition zone in all concentrations of snakehad fish oil extract. Conclusion: snakehead fish oil with the concentrations of 0.062-32 μl/ml could not inhibit the growth of C. albicans. Keywords: antifungal agents, Candida albicans, fish oil, Channa striata.
