Abstract

Background: Streptococcus sanguinis is the first bacterium to colonize tooth surfaces and a pioneer by forming dental plaque, which caused dental caries and periodontal disease. Soursop leaf have been reported to contain steroids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and flavonoids which have antibacterial potential. Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of soursop leaf extract against S. sanguinis bacteria growth. Method: The present study was an in vitro experimental laboratory research with post-test only control group design. This study used soursop leaf extract with concentration of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. The positive control used was clorhexidine 0,2% and the negative control was aquadest. The inhibition test of soursop leaf extract were measured using Kirby-Bauer discs method. Data were analyzed with One Way ANOVA and followed by Post-Hoc Turkey HSD. Results: The results showed that the soursop leaf extract have antibacterial activity at concentrations of 25% with inhibitory diameter of 2,0125 mm and 20% with inhibitory diameter of 1,35 mm, but the concentrations of 15%, 10%, and 5% have no inhibition zone against S. sanguinis. There were significant difference in 25% and 20% to 5%, 10%, 15% extract treatment group, control negative and positive control treatment group to 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% extract treatment group, control negative (p<0,05). Conclusion: Soursop leaf extract with concentrations of 20% and 25% have antibacterial activity against S. sanguinis bacteria growth. Keywords: anti-bacterial agents, Annona, Streptococcus sanguis
