Abstract

The number of landslides in the landfill shows that the landfill is an engineering structure whose stability must be assessed. Variations in the composition of waste, and changing lifestyles based on electronics and leaving paper make the geotechnical parameters of MSW vary widely and can change. Thus, it is necessary to study the geotechnical parameters of MSW for more reliable landfill stability and to anticipate future landslides. Some researchers have linked landslides with reduced paper components in landfill landfills. This study aims to determine changes in physical characteristics (moisture content, filter analysis and density) and hydraulic characteristics (hydraulic conductivity) of specific Indonesian waste with and without paper components. Waste samples (artificial) made of leaves, paper and plastic, with two variants samples, namely: (1) organic, plastics, and paper, and (2) organic and plastics. Both sample variants were tested (under conditions of optimum moisture content) for 45 days, with test intervals every 5 days. The results showed that the hydraulic conductivity and particle size of the two waste sample variants decreased, whereas the wet density increased. The dry density did not show a significant increase. The water content of the mixture of leaf, paper and plastic waste (at the time of the test for 45 days) was above the optimum moisture content (initial test conditions). On the other hand, the water content of the leaf and plastic mixture (at the time of the test) tended to be below the optimum moisture content (initial conditions). The bulk and dry densities of leaf, plastic and paper mixture were higher than those of mixture the leaf and plastic variants. Likewise, the hydraulic conductivity of leaf, plastic, and paper waste drops faster (close to constant) than leaf litter and plastic. The paper component makes the waste sample denser. Variations in physical and hydraulic characteristics of the waste samples make this research should be continued with a wider sample variant and a longer study time.
