Abstract

This research was aimed to evaluate growth in chives (Allium schoenoprasum .L) exposed decreased soil moisture content. This research was started from April 2020 to October 2020 in Jakabaring (104° 46'44 "E; 3 ° 01'35" S), Palembang, South Sumatra. Randomized block design was used, while ANOVA and a further BNT 5% test were utilized for data analysis. The observed parameters included number of leaves, highest leaves length, number of tillers, intensity of green colour of the leaves, canopy area, leaves fresh weight, leaves dry weight, leaves moisture content, roots fresh weight, roots dry weight, roots moisture content, roots length, shoot ratio and roots, soil moisture and soil temperature. Decreased soil moisture content in the vegetative phase and flower initiation was carried out for 14 days for each treatment, based on soil moisture data which was measured daily during the treatments. The results of this research indicated that there was no significant effect of the treatments, both during the vegetatif phase and flower initiation phase, even after experiencing decreased soil moisture content treatment, the results were not significant for almost all growth and harvest variables, except for the highest leaf length (at 6 weeks after transplating) with the highest length in D1 treatment of 23,08 cm, followed by D0 and D2 of 20,97 cm and 20,09 cm, while and the intensity of green colour of the leaves (at 14 weeks after transplanting) very significant effect with the highest intensity of green colour of the leaves in treatment D1 of 65,89, followed by D2 and D0 of 64,10 and 60,06. Based on the results, chives have a moderate tolerance to drought stress so it can be grown on dryland.
