Abstract

Background: Contact lenses are ocular prosthetic devices that are wore by > 150 million people worldwide. Contact lenses are wore to correct refractive errors, provide a better appearance, and reduce activity limitation. CDC reports the number of contact lens wearers in the United States in 2015, there were 41 million contact lens wearers aged ≥ 18 years. About 34.6% of contact lens wearers in China reported experiencing at least one complication related to the contact lens wear. This study aims to determine the characteristics of contact lens wearers. Method: This is a descriptive study with cross sectional approach. The data were collected through online questionnaires using google form. A preliminary survey was conducted to determine the population. The sample was obtained using total sampling technique with a total of 431 respondents who were active students of the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University in the academic year of 2019-2020 and wore contact lenses. Results: The majority of contact lens wearers were women (91.4%) and 20 years old (26%). 46.6% of the respondents have worn contact lenses > 2 years and the majority of the respondents (62.6%) wear contact lenses for 8-12 hours in a day. The most widely wore types of contact lenses were soft lenses (98.6%) and extended-wear disposable lenses (47.5%) and daily-wear soft lenses (42.6%). The majority of refractive errors were corrected using myopia lenses (95.2%). The majority of the respondents performed hygiene by using a contact lens container (85.5%), washing their hands before wearing contact lenses (88.4%), cleaning contact lenses after wearing (90.3%), replacing fluids in the lens case / case contact every day (79.4%), and did not sleep wearing contact lenses (87.5%). 52.5% of the respondents experienced symptoms during contact lens wear, with 61.3% of the respondents experiencing dry eyes. Conclusion: Most of the contact lens wearers were women and 20 years old. The respondents have worn contact lenses> 2 years and contact lenses are wore for 8-12 hours a day. The types of contact lenses that are mostly wore were soft lenses with extended-wear disposable and daily wear types. The corrected refractive error was myopia. The respondents performed good hygiene and contact lens wear. The majority of complaints experienced were dry eyes. Key words: Characteristics, Contact Lens, Medical Students
