Abstract

The data of prevalence of acute transfusion reaction and possible associated factors in Palembang have not been reported. Whereas, the information related to transfusion reaction is important in order to assure patient safety. This study aimed to analyze possible risk factors affecting acute transfusion reaction in RSUP Dr. Moh. Hoesin Palembang during January 1 2019-December 31 2019. This was an observational analytic study with cross sectional design to determine the prevalence dan risk factors of acute transfusion reaction in RSUP Dr. Moh. Hoesin Palembang. Data was collected from blood bank department of Dr. Moh. Hoesin Palembang. Variables examined including blood type, transfused blood component, and units of blood transfused. The obtained data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis. Prevalence of acute transfusion reaction in RSUP Dr. Moh. Hoesin Palembang in 2019 was 0.08%. There was no significant relationship between blood type and acute transfusion reaction (p=0.515, OR=1.253, 95%CI=0.634-2.475). There was significant relationship between the number of units of blood transfused and acute transfusion reaction (p=0.038, OR=2.453, 95%CI=1.073-5.607). Factor contributing to incidence of acute transfusion reaction was the number of blood units transfused. Patient receiving more than 2 units of blood have 2.5 times greater risk to develop acute transfusion reaction compared to patients receiving less than or equal to 2 units of blood.
