Abstract

Background. Vaginal discharge is excessive vaginal secretion from the vulva or excessive fluid from the vagina that is not blood. Vaginal discharge consists of two types, namely physiological and pathological. In physiological, vaginal discharge is characterized by clear vaginal secretion sometimes white, thick, odorless, itchy, and painless. While in pathological, vaginal discharge is obtained by milky white to yellowish vaginal secretion like cheese or green, foamy, smelly, itchy, and painful. Personal hygiene is an act of maintaining cleanliness and personal health by a person to achieve physical and psychic well-being, including maintaining genital hygiene. Poor personal hygiene contributes to the incidence of vaginal discharge. The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship between personal hygiene and vaginal discharge in female students of the Faculty of Medicine in Sriwijaya University. Methods. This research was an analytical observational research using cross sectional research design in female students of the Faculty of Medicine in Sriwijaya University class of 2017 with a sample of 193 respondents. This research was conducted in August-December 2020. The data in this research were obtained by distributing questionnaires through google form, then analyzed univariately and bivariately using the SPSS application. Result. The result in this research showed that p-value=0,000 (<0,005) from the bivariate data analysis. Conclusion. There is a relationship between personal hygiene and vaginal discharge in female students of the Faculty of Medicine in Sriwijaya University class of 2017.
