Abstract

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is the most common musculoskeletal complaints in general practitioners clinic and the major cause of world Years Lived with Disabilities (YLDs). Majority of the cases are nonspecific LBP. During adolescence, about 40% of ages 9-18 years have a history of LBP. The causes of LBP are multifactorial, several risk factors that have been linked as the causes of LBP and disability in adolescents are the use of heavy backpacks for a long time, lack of physical activity, watching television or playing video-games for too long, biopsychosocial disorders, and being overweight or obese. Weight gain in obese LBP patients will have an impact on difficulties with daily activities, such as walking, climbing stairs, or driving. This disorder will cause physical inactivity, pain, functional limitations, and decreased range of motion. The increased incidence of overweight and obesity as well as lack of physical activity increases the incidence of LBP in adolescents who have the potential to recur or develop into chronic LBP with disabilities in adulthood. Thus the identification of the incidence rate and early detection in populations with risk factors for LBP such as obesity is necessary so that preventive action can be made. Methods: In this analytical observational with cross-sectional study design primary data was obtained to analyze the associations of BMI and disability due to LBP among SMA Plus Negeri 17 Palembang students aged 15-17 years old. The sampling method in this study is consecutive sampling. Nordic Body Map was used for the analysis of LBP symptoms and Oswestry Disability Index used for the analysis of disability index due to LBP. Results: Out of 227 subjects recruited, the occurrence of LBP was high, with 134 (59,0%) students suffered from LBP. Most of the students, 176 (77,5%) have normal BMI. Minimal disability were reported in 90 (67,2%) from 134 students with LBP. BMI was significantly correlated with LBP (p < 0,001) and disability due to LBP (p < 0,05). Conclusions: LBP among adolescents is common. BMI is significantly associated with LBP and disability due to LBP in SMA Plus Negeri 17 Palembang students.
