Abstract

Background: Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy characterized by degeneration of retinal ganglion cells which is caused by increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Corticosteroids have been known to cause an increase in IOP. Steroid-induced IOP elevation depends on the duration of therapy, dose, potency and physicochemical properties of the steroid, route of administration, and individual susceptibility. Steroid-induced glaucoma is a common side effect of long-term steroid use. Among the side effects of the eye, secondary glaucoma is the most common. Methods: This study is a descriptive observational study. The study was conducted by collecting secondary data (recapitulation of medical records) of secondary glaucoma patients or an increase in IOP due to steroid use in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Results: There were patients with increased intraocular pressure or glaucoma secondary to steroid use with the age group> 40 years (56 %%), male gender (52%), all patients had an increase in intraocular pressure with a minimum value of 19.5 mmHg and a maximum value of 61.5 mmHg, no optic nerve damage (76%), no visual field defects (76%), history of using prednisolone steroids (80%), topical steroid use (56%), duration of steroid use> 6 weeks (68%) and no family history with glaucoma (44%). Conclusion: Increased intraocular pressure or glaucoma secondary to steroid use was more prevalent in the age group> 40 years and male sex. In patients with increased intraocular pressure or glaucoma secondary to steroid use, the minimum intraocular pressure value was 19.5 mmHg and the maximum value was 61.5 mmHg, more patients who have no optic nerve damage, no visual field defects, history of using prednisolone steroid use, topical steroid use, duration of steroid use> 6 weeks (68%) and no family history of glaucoma. Keywords: steroids, increased intraocular pressure, secondary glaucoma.
