Abstract

Stunting is a chronic malnutrition that causes children to be short for their age. In fact, Indonesia still has obstacles in overcoming stunting, one of which is in the form of insufficient nutritional surveillance. Stunting children who are not closely monitored have an impact on nutritional problems, especially in the low birth weight who require optimal nutritional intervention to support their growth and development. This study is an analytical observational study with a case control design. Samples were obtained by purposive sampling from the nutrition report data of children aged 6—59 months. Then, interviews were conducted with the mothers through home visits. Data were analyzed using the Chi square test and the Chi square Mantel Haenszel stratification test. Chi-square test results showed that LBW (OR = 5.2; 95% CI = 1.4—18,9), exclusive breastfeeding (OR = 5.39; 95% CI = 1.3—22,2), and history of illness (OR = 6.15; 95% CI = 1.1—3,8) was associated with stunting. Based on the Chi-square Mantel Haenszel stratification test, it was found that exclusive breastfeeding, time of introduction to complementary foods, and history of illness were confounding factors in the relationship between Low Birth Weight (LBW) and stunting. LBW is a risk factor for stunting in children aged 6—59 months. Exclusive breastfeeding, time of introduction to complementary foods, and history of illness were confounding factors in the relationship between LBW and the incidence of stunting.
