Abstract

Introduction. Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is a combination of eye and vision problems associated with gadgets use including desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones and e-readers. Distance Learning Period has become the main choice for learning activities during a pandemic. Since the implementation of distance learning period, the use of gadgets has increased among students, so that it can have a negative impact on eye health. This study aims to analyse the relation of using gadget with CVS among undergraduate Medical Students of Sriwijaya University during distance learning period. Method. This research is an analytic observational study with a cross sectional study design using primary data from the google form questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to all students of the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University, class 2017-2019 who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result. The prevalence of CVS experienced by among undergraduate Medical Students of Sriwijaya University during distance learning period. was 52 people (73.2%). The most complained of CVS symptoms was headache as many as 56 people (78.9%) and the least complained symptom was seeing coloured halos around objects as many as 17 people (23.9%). Significant correlation was found between the intensity of gadget use, use of contact lenses/ glasses, and screen reflection with CVS (p<0,05). There was no significant correlation between viewing distance, source of lightning, and screen brightness with CVS (p>0,05). The risk factor that most influenced the prevalence of CVS was the use of contact lenses/ glasses with an odds ratio of 7,000 (95% CI = 1,968-24,895). Conclusions. Factors associated with CVS are the intensity of gadget use, use of contact lenses/ glasses, and screen reflection.
