Abstract

A high Body Mass Index (BMI) value or obesity is a metabolic syndrome that results various diseases complications such as coronary heart disease and stroke, which are the leading causes of death in the world, pharmacological therapies for obesity are available (orlistat, phentermine, lorcaserin) but have very great side effects. Herbal medicines are claimed to be effective and have minimal side effects in controlling this metabolic syndrome. One of them is emprit ginger (Zingiber officinale var Amarum) which is usually used as a spice in various dishes, emprit ginger is thought to have the potential to reduce BMI values in various ways that are almost similar to the antioxidant Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) which also has minimal side effects. This research aims to compare the strength of emprit ginger extract (EGE) with Alpha Lipoic Acid in reducing BMI in male Wistar rats. Methods: This research was an in vivo experimental study with a pre post control group design with a total sample of 30 white Wistar rats divided into 5 treatment groups. The measurement of BMI is calculated using the formula (g / m2). EGE and ALA were administered for 4 weeks, the results of the data were analyzed using the One way ANOVA test. Results: The results of the One way ANOVA test showed that the mean difference in BMI between treatment groups after being given emprit ginger extract with a value of p = 0.000 (p <0.05). The group given 200 mg / kgBW and 600 mg / kgBW of emprit ginger extract was effective in reducing the BMI of rats, with 600 mg / kgBW of emprit ginger extract had same effectiveness to Alpha Lipoic Acid. Conclusion: 200 mg / kgBW and 600 mg / kgBW of emprit ginger extract were effective in reducing BMI of male Wistar rats. Keywords: obesity, BMI, emprit ginger extract, alpha lipoic acid
