Abstract

Background: Inguinal hernia is one of the most common case that can be found in scope of pediatric surgery. This condition is characterized by protrusion of intraabdominal contents through the abdominal wall in inguinal region. Inguinal hernia in children can not resolve spontaneously and is often asymptomatic. Immediet treatment is needed to eliminate the risk of complication due to delayed operative repair. Aim of this study is to determine the overview of patients with inguinal hernia in children at RSMH Palembang from January 2016 to December 2019. Method: This study is an observational descriptive study with cross sectional design. The research data were collected from medical record of patients with inguinal hernia in children at RSMH Palembang from January 2016 to December 2019 that met the inclusion criteria. Results: Most patients with inguinal hernia in children were in the age range of 1-4 years (50,0%). Patients consisted of 84,3% males and 15,7% females. The location of the hernia was mostly found on the right lateral (48,6%). The most common complication of patients with inguinal hernia in children was incaceration (31,4%). Based on the maturity of birth, the majority of patients were born mature (31,4%). All patients with inguinal hernia in children have no family history with the same complaint. Conclusion: The incidences are higher in males than in females with the highest age range of 1-4 years and the location of the hernia mostly found on the right lateral. The most common complication is incarceration. The majority of patients were born mature with no family history. Its expected for RSMH Palembang to maximize the quality of storage and recording data through medical records to support future research. Keywords: Inguinal hernia, children, characteristic
