Abstract

The synthesis of semiconductor ZnO-Mg and application for methylene blue photodegradation had been done. Semiconductor of ZnO was doped by Mg metal. The ZnO-Mg semiconductors were made with mass ratio (3.5:5), (2:3) and (2:1) and were characterized used XRD, UV-DRS (Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy) and SEM. The result of characterization using XRD showed a typical peak intensity at 2θ = 32.9°. The SEM of semiconductor ZnO-Mg showed irregular and porous surface shape with the composition elements of Zn (58.88%), O (10.49%) and Mg (4.59%). The results of characterization UV-DRS (Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy) showed a energy bandgap of ZnO-Mg 2.3 eV. The maximum photodegradation ZnO-Mg (2:1) semiconductor to methylene blue dyes was carried out on 180 minutes contact time at pH 9 and concentration in 5 ppm with the percent effectiveness of 87.18%.
