Abstract

In this test, I used a heat treated ASSAB 709M steel specimen, and this test aims to determine the carbon content of ASSAB 709M steel, determine the microstructure of steel without heat treatment and in heat treated steel, determine the mechanical properties of steel in the annealing process. This testing process is that ASSAB 709M steel is heated at an austenite temperature of 850 ° C then it is held for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes and then cooled by annealing process. Annealing is the process of cooling in the furnace to room temperature or normal temperature. Mechanical testing was carried out, including tensile, impact, and microstructure testing. Tensile test is a test that aims to get an overview of the characteristics of a material, this test is carried out in the manufacturing polytechnic metal casting engineering material laboratory (Polman) Bandung. The impact test can be used to determine whether a material has a characteristic change from ductile to brittle with a decrease in operating temperature. This test is carried out in the metallurgical laboratory, majoring in mechanical engineering, Universitas Sriwijaya. The microstructure test aims to determine the structure that is in the steel, with the metallographic method using optical and electron microscopes, this test is carried out in the mechanical engineering laboratory of the University of Sriwijaya. Before carrying out all tests, the tools and materials that will be used during the testing process have been prepared.
