Abstract

In this test, AISI 4140 steel is used. AISI 4140 steel is a type of medium carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.4%. Steel AISI 4140 is widely used in the construction sector which prioritizes its strength properties, because of that this steel has been subjected to an austemper and quenching treatment process in the production process so that AISI 4140 steel has brittle properties and poor machine capability. In order to increase the good machine capability of AISI 4140 Steel, a normalizing heat treatment process is carried out with a holding time of 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes so that it is engineered to be more ductile and increased toughness. The tests carried out are tensile testing, impact testing, and microstructure testing. The results of the tensile test decrease and the results of the increased impact tests indicate that the material has increased ductility and toughness. For the microstructure test results, the dominant structure is ferrite and pearlite structure and the structure is more homogeneous than the material before normalization treatment.
