Abstract

Health and education are two pillars of human development. Children and adolescents are ages vulnerable to the risk of disease during growth and development towards adulthood. School Health Unit is an effort to improve the health status of school-age children. In malaria endemic areas, school-age children are prone to anemia. Endemic environmental conditions and lack of nutritional intake increase anemia. The data obtained in Seluma District shows that elementary school-aged children who suffer from anemia were 21.08%. This study aimed to analyze the role of School Health Unit in monitoring the incidence of anemia in school-aged children in Seluma District, malaria-endemic area. This research method was qualitative design, informants in this study was selected by purposive. Data collection techniques were by in-depth interviews with 10 informants, interviewing 20 students with a checklist, observation and document review. The triangulation carried out was in the form of source triangulation, method triangulation and data triangulation. Technical data analysis was done by data reduction, presenting data, drawing conclusions and verification. The results of the study wasthat the School Health Unit in the elementary school of Seluma District already exists even though it has not been maximized due to limited resources that are competent in its implementation. The role of School Health Unit through health education has been carried out but there is not yet specifically for anemia. Teachers and health workers play a role in providing information and material to students. The Role of School Health Unit through health services in preventing anemia is carried out by measuring height and weight to monitor the nutritional status of students but has not run optimally because it is only done once a year. Monitoring anemia in elementary school children was done by examining the conjunctiva but there was no examination of anemia with blood. The role of SchoolHealth Unit through fostering a healthy school environment has not run optimally because community health center officers have not participated in conducting guidance on clean water management, waste management and management of water storage in schools. Utilization of facilities and infrastructure has not run optimally because the facilities and infrastructure needed in the SchoolHealthUnit, especially for anemia monitoring, were not complete so that their utilization is also limited. This study suggests that training be provided to teachers in charge of School Health Unit so that they are more competent, students are given health education about anemia, increase cooperation with community health center in providing health services and supplement facilities and infrastructure in schools.
