Abstract

White top borer Scirpophaga excerptalis is one of production limiting factors of national sugar production. The white borer attack sugar cane through leaf midrib by making hole and tunnel to the plant top and rest in the youngest node of the plant. This research was aimed at knowing the damage intensity of white borer infestation on sugar cane variety KK and BM167 and knowing the growth difference between the two varieties. The research was conducted in PTPN VII located in Cinta Manis, District Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra from September to November 2020. The research used survey method by observing population of white top borer on sugar cane of 1-3 months old wit an interval of one week. Samples were taken from 5 sampling points. From each samples, 15 plants were taken as sample plants. The highest number of egg packet of white top borer Scirpophaga excerptalis was found in BM1677 variety of block 142 in the fifth observation amounted to 1,80 egg colonies. This because of the abundance of weeds in the location. The highest number of white top borer S. excerptalis larvae was found in BM1677 variety of block 142 of eighth observation, amounted to 2,40 larvae, and of tenth observation amounted to 2,20 larvae. From each observation we always found different results, and this because of the abundance of weeds and the application of chemicals. The average number of imago and pupae of white top borer was not significantly different amongst treatments. Agronomic parameter of sugar cane were plant height and number of sucker and were significantly different during 12 observation of 1-3 months of plant age. The damage intensity caused by white top borer S. excerptalis on sugar cane showed an increase in every observation, from the beginning to the end of observation. The highest intensity was found in variety of KK block 162 in 11th observation. The conclusion of this research is the highest intensity of damage on sugar cane caused by white top borer S. excerptalis was found in variety BM 1677. Variety of KK was more resistant to white top borer S. excerptalis compared to variety BM1677. Population dynamic of white top borer S. excerptalis and growth rate was influenced by environment factor I.e. temperature, humidity, sugar cane variety and cropping system of sugar cane.
