Abstract

Background: Guazuma ulmifolia Lamk. leaves widely used in Indonesia as slimming tea. Guazuma oil known to contain polyphenol compound that reported by in-vitro study to posses high levels of antioxidant activity. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Guazuma ulmifolia Lamk. leaves essential oil on obesity model wistar rats to decrease body weight and malondialdehyde levels as biomarker of oxidative stress. Method: This study is an experimental with pre- and post-test group design, held at Biomoleculer Laboratorium and Animal House, Faculty of Medicine Sriwijaya University from September until December 2017. Thirty wistar white rats were divided by 5 groups: all groups were inducted by high fat diet for 4 months. Each subject in each group were given Guazuma ulmifolia oil doses 1.25 mL, 2.5 mL and 5 mL for 14 days by oral, and 6.67 mg/kgBW of orlistat were used as positive control, and aquadest as negative control. Body weight were measured by electronic scale and malondialdehyde levels were measured by ELISA. Results: Guazuma oil 1.25 mL showed the lowest increased of body weight compare to other oil doses, with post-test body weight about 43 ± 4.58 (15.1%), no significantly different with 6.67 mg/kgBW orlistat (11.7%) statistically. Guazuma oil 1.25 mL showed the highest decreased of malondialdehyde levels compare to other oil doses, with post-test malondialdehyde level about 4.484 ± 0.073, significantly different with with 6.67 mg/kgBW orlistat (3.007 ± 0.149) statistically. Conclusion: Guazuma ulmifolia essential oil decreases body weight and malondialdehyde levels on high fat diet induced obesity Wistar rats models in antioxidant effect.
