Abstract

Background. Pterygium is a conjungtival fibrovascular growth that have both invasife and degenerative character. One of the cause of pterygium is Ultraviolet (UV) mainly UVA and UVB. Based on its size pterygium is divided into 4 category, which is grade1, 2, 3, and 4. This study aimed to determine the correlation between grading of pterygium and sunlight exposures at South Sumatra Eye Hospital. Methods. This research was a descriptive correlative study with case series design. Samples of this study were medical records of pterygium patients at South Sumatra Eye Hospital with 40 minimal samples. After the samples had been collected, the patients were interviewed by phone or by home visite. The data were analyzed using gamma correlation. Result:From 40 subjects most of them was diagnosed as grade IV (39,7%), and followed by pterygium grade III (31%), grade II (25,9%), and grade I (3,4%). There was a strong positive correlation between grade of pterygium and time of sunlight exposures in 10 years ago (p value=0,018, r=0,458). Unfortunately there was no significant correlation between grade of pterygium and sunlight exposure in 5 years ago (p value=0,072). Conclution: sunlight exposures in 10 years ago was significantly related to the grading of pterygium.
