Abstract

Background: According to Pusat Data dan Informasi Kementrian Kesehatan RI (2014), in the year 2008 estimated 17.3 million deaths caused by diseases due to heart and blood vessel function disorder or usually called cardiovascular disease. Elevated blood levels of triglyceride can be the factor that increase the risk of blood vessel disease. One of the therapeutic options for lowering blood triglyceride levels is the omega-3 fatty acids, derived from fish oil and other seafood. Catfish is one of the fish that contains omega 3. Catfish can be processed into many variety of foods and one of them is pindang. In Palembang, almost every restaurant serves pindang. Pindang is one of the foods that have a characteristically flavor. Methods: The type of this study was laboratory experimental using a randomized prepost-test design with a control group (Randomized prepost-test with control group). The experimental animals used were male mice (Mus musculus). After the adaptation time, the mice were given the high-fat diet by using fat as much as 20% of body weight for 7 days. After that the mice were given pindang patin for 21 days. Samples were divided into 5 groups: Negative Control, Positive Control (Simvastatin), Dose I (pindang patin 0.26 ml / 20 grams of body weight), Dose II (pindang patin 0.52 ml / 20 grams of body weight) and Dose III (pindang patin 1.04 ml / 20 grams of body weight). Blood samples were examined by using a spectrophotometer. Results: Dose II (0.52 ml / 20 grams of body weight) and Dose III (1.04 ml / 20 grams of body weight) has the effect in decreasing the blood level of triglyceride of male mice (Mus musculus), and Dose I, II, and III has no effect in decreasing the blood level of LDL of male mice (Mus musculus). Conclusion: Pindang patin can decrease the blood level of triglyceride but has no effect on blood level of LDL of male mice (Mus musculus).
