Abstract

Background: Uncaria gambir is one of native plants which is spread over Indonesia, especially in Sumatera and Kalimantan Island. This plant has potential in therapeutics. In Sumatera, Gambir has been used as traditional treatment for fever, diarrhea, diabetic and wound healing. Objective: This study were conducted to further elucidated gambir extract effect to the area of lessions on gastritis induced white mouse. Methods: This study is a posttest only control group design. Wistar white mouse (Rattus norvegicus) were inducted by using toxic doses etanol 96% for consecutive 2 days. Gambir were extracted by using maseration technique. Gambir extract were given to each group with three different doses, 20 mg/kgBB, 40 mg/kgBB and 80 mg/kgBB. Ranitidine were used as positive control. The averages of lesion area were scored by ulcer index. Results: Gambir extract divided into three different doses concentration exhibit positive effect to reduce the area of lesion gastric mucosa on gastritis induced white mouse. Increased doses of gambir extract were associated with positive impact toward reducing the area of gastric mucosa lesions. Conclusion: Gambir (Uncaria gambir (Hunter) Roxb) extract significantly reduce the area of gastric mucosa lesions on gastritis induced white mouse, thus, further study can be developed as potention gastroprotective.
