Abstract

Microgreens are young vegetables that can be harvested at an early stage of growth, when the plants are 7-14 days old. The public started to be interest to microgreens because of their nutrition content that higher compare to the adult vegetables. One of the crops that are harvested in the form of microgreens is radish plant. Radish microgreens were harvested when the plants were 7 days after planting (DAP) or when the cotyledons of the plants were completely open. Radish plant microgreens are a source of polyphenols which as antioxidants that are good for health. Cultivating microgreens is quite simple, due to young and small size of the plants, it also do not require much space in cultivation. There are several things that must be considered in cultivating microgreens, one of them is planting media. Microgreens are often being cultivated by using rockwool media. However, rockwool is an inorganic media that can only be used once during the planting period. Therefore, organic planting media will be more effective in cultivating microgreens because it can be used for more than one planting period and considered as environmental friendly. Some organic growing media that can be used include cocopeat and husk charcoal. Cocopeat and husk charcoal have good porosity that have a high water absorption ability. The use of organic growing media combined with soil will support optimal growth of radish plant microgreens. Microgreens are plants that can be consumed immediately after harvesting. For this reason, cleanliness in the cultivation process must be guaranteed so that the microgreens product remain hygienic. One way to protect microgreens from being hygiene is to sterilize the planting media. Planting media sterilization can be done in several ways, one of them is by using an autoclave. Planting media sterilization is done to remove unwanted microbes in the planting media. The combination of organic growing media and soil with sterilization treatment of planting media is thought to have an effect on the cultivation of radish microgreens. This study aims to analyze the effect of sterilization of planting media and a combination of organic growing media and its interaction on the growth of radish microgreens, and to obtain the best combination of growing media for the production of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) microgreens. The research was conducted from October to November 2020 in the Laboratory of soil and seed, Kebun Percobaan (BUNCOB) of the research department of PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja (PUSRI) Palembang City, South Sumatra. The design used in this study was a split plot design consisting of 2 factors. The first factor was the sterilization of the planting media, which consisted of S0 = non-sterile planting media and S1 = sterile planting media. The second factor is a combination of planting media consisting of M1 = 100% soil, M2 = 75% soil + 25% husk charcoal, M3 = 50% soil + 50% husk charcoal, M4 = 25% soil + 75% husk charcoal, M5 = 75% soil + 25% cocopeat, M6 = 50% soil + 50% cocopeat, and M7 = 25% soil + 75% cocopeat. The variables observed were germination percentage, plant height, plant fresh weight, root length, root fresh weight, and pH value. Based on the results of the study, non-sterile planting media with a combination of 75% soil + 25% cocopeat was the best growing media treatment for the growth of radish plant microgreens. The results suggest that the cultivation of radish microgreens should be carried out in non-sterile media with a combination of 75% soil + 25% cocopeat to get the best crop yields, especially for plant height and fresh weight of radish microgreens. In addition, the planting medium can be used for more than one planting period with optimal results. Keywords: Radish Microgreens, Sterilization, Growing Media Combinations
