Abstract

Background: Beetroot juice is an alternative ingredient that has benefits for oral health. Beetroot contain flavonoids, saponins and tannins which are believed to have antibacterial properties which are known to reduce plaque scores on teeth. Objective: To determine the effect of rinsing beetroot juice in reducing plaque scores in children aged 9-10 years. Method: This research was conducted by experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The number of samples used was 22 people divided into two groups, namely the treatment group (beetroot juice) and the control group (chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2). The sample was instructed to rinse the solution according to the respective groups twice a day for seven days as much as 10 ml for 30 seconds. Plaque scores were measured using the Quigley-Hein modified Turensky-Gilmore-Glickman plaque index. Data were tested using parametric tests, namely paired T test and unpaired T test. Result: The mean plaque score in the group treated with beetroot juice had a significant difference (0.05) before (2.69 0.71) and after (2.02 0.70) rinsing. The mean plaque scores in the 0.2 chlorhexidine gluconate group were significantly different (0.05) before (2.54 0.65) and after (1.74 0.57) rinsing. Conclusion: There is an effect of gargling beetroot juice on reducing plaque scores in children aged 9-10 years. Keywords: beet juice, plaque score, rinsing
