Abstract

Decreased oxygen saturation in patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) occurs due to oxygen pressure decrease in venous which is caused by the disruption of perfusion and ventilation in lung. the improvement can be made with required tools and materials which can improve the perfusion and ventilation ability of the lung. Peppermint aromatherapy contains menthol which is able to open the respiratory tract and acts as a decongestant. the aim of this study, was to determine the effect of peppermint aromatherapy on oxygen saturation of the patients with COPD. This research is a quantitative study using quasy experimental research design with one group pretest-posttest technique. Data analysis using the Wilcoxon rank test statistical test. Oxygen Saturation value before giving peppermint aromatherapy (pretest) there were 15 respondents had oxygen saturation <95% with a percentage of 88.2% and 2 respondents had oxygen saturation ≥95% or a percentage of 11.8%. Oxygen saturation values after peppermint aromatherapy (posttest) there were 5 respondents had oxygen saturation <95% with a percentage of 29.4% and 12 respondents had oxygen saturation ≥95% or a percentage of 70.6%. There is a significant difference in oxygen saturation before and after peppermint aromatherapy with a p-value of 0,000 less than the α-0.05 Pulse oximetry can only measure blood oxygen bonds and do not measure oxygen directly in the vascular system such as BGA (Blood Gas Analysis).
