Abstract

Background: Dysphonia is a symptom indicated by changes in vocal quality which affects the oral communication and/or quality of life. Previous epidemiological studies of dysphonia have mostly focused on specific age groups, occupations, or areas. This study aims to determine the characteristics of patients with dysphonia in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang. The results are presented in tabular and narrative form. Results: The incidence rate of dysphonia was 0.58%, obtained from 205 cases of dysphonia from total of 35,368 visits. A total of 66 medical records met the criteria for inclusion in this study, with 57.6% of patients in the 18-59 years age group; 74.2% of patients was man and 25.8% was woman; 72.7% of patients was in non-vocal non-professional group (Level IV); 68.2% of patients had a smoking habit; 13.6% of patients had a habit of drinking alcohol; 6.1% of patients had a history of noise exposure; 28.8% of patients had a history of LPR; and 75.8% of patients had an abnormal VHI-10 score.
