Abstract

This research was conducted to understand and analyze the social life of scavengers at TPA Sukawinatan Palembang City. The object of this research is the community residing in the Sukawinatan landfill area of Palembang City. This study aims to examine how the life of education, the life of helping out in scavengers, and whether there is competition between waste collectors. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with the main informants, namely scavengers and supporting informants, namely the active management of UPT TPA Sukawinatan. Data informant techniques that apply in-depth interviews and open to key informants and supporting informants, observation, and documentation. The results of this study can be seen that the educational background of scavengers, the education of children of scavengers and the factors that occur to the scavengers in sending their children to school. From the sense of helping in the scavengers, that the scavengers are equally helping each other in helping and caring for others. Next is the competition for scavengers at the Sukawinatan TPA, that there is no competition between scavengers at the Sukawinatan TPA in Palembang City.
