Abstract

Stunting is a nutritional problem caused by chronic malnutrition. Stunting can result in decreased concentration, memory damage, decreased learning and school performance, decreased cognitive function, impaired motor development, and has a long-term impact on reducing productivity, thus inhibiting economic growth and causing intergenerational poverty. Stunting can be influenced by social, economic, and access to health services factors. This study aims to analyze the correlation of social, economic, and utilization of Posyandu with the incidence of stunting of under-fives in poor families in Palembang. This study used mixed method with a cross-sectional design in March 2019. Population were toddlers aged 24-59 months from poor families in Palembang, with the criteria receiving the Program Keluarga Harapan (PKH) - a conditional cash transfer programme from the Indonesian Government. Samples were 100 people chosen by proportional sampling and informant was chosen by purposive sampling method. Results showed that the proportion of stunting of under-fives in poor families in Palembang was 29,0%. The results of the chi-square analysis showed that there was a significant correlation between maternal education (p = 0,032; OR = 3,512) with the incidence of stunting, but there was no significant correlation between father's education (p = 0,253), father's occupation (p = 0,872), maternal working status (p = 0,381), number of under-fives (p = 0,407), birth interval (p = 0,751), birth order (p = 0,974), number of family members (p = 0,161), food expenditure (p = 0,390), and utilization of Posyandu (p = 0,157) with the incidence of stunting. Maternal education is the most dominant risk factor in causing stunting. The conclusion from this study is maternal education has an important role in the incidence of stunting, so we suggest citizen to improve the formal education of prospective mothers, at minimum to high school level.
