Abstract

Background: Increased sensitivity to infections such as UTI in DM is caused by various factors, whether caused by hyperglycemia or impaired immunity. UTI cases are often asymptomatic and therefore cannot be diagnosed directly. Several studies have linked UTIs and with metabolic control. This research aims to analyze the correlation between suspected UTI incident and HbA1c level in patients with type 1 DM. Methods: This research is an analytic observational study using cross-sectional design. Samples are medical records of type 1 DM patients in the age range of 1-17 in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang taken from the month of August to October 2018. A sum of 24 samples are acquired. The results of this research are displayed in tables and narations. Results: Out of 24 type 1 DM cases, it was discovered that most patients are girls (58.3%), in the age range of 6-11 (50%) averaging at 10.8 years, and the highest IMT group is underweight (91.7%). Laboratory findings showed that suspected UTI (16.7%) with HbA1c level mostly in bad metabolic control (83.3%) and positive urine culture (20.8%). Correlation results in type 1 DM showed no remarkable correlation between suspected UTI with HbA1c levels (p=0.639) and no remarkable correlation between urine culture results and HbA1c levels (p=0.742). Conclusion: No remarkable correlation between suspected UTI and HbA1c level in patients with type 1 DM.
