Abstract

This research about synthesis and characterization of hydroxyapatite (HAp) from chicken egg shells and the effect of alumina addition (Al2O3) on hydroxyapatite mechanical properties has been done. This research aimed to determine the effect of temperature and calcination time on hydroxyapatite synthesis and the effect of alumina addition on the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite. Synthesis of hydroxyapatite used sol gel method. The synthesis of hydroxyapatite was carried out with precursor 80% H3PO4, 96% ethanol, and was composited with alumina and gelatin 10%. The precipitated HAp was calcined with varying on temperature 600oC, 700oC, 800oC, 900oC, dan 1000oC with calcination time 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours. The yield of HAp obtained from varying on temperature is 87.02%, 84.10%, 83.85%, 81.57%, 76.46% and calcination time is obtained 84.48%, 76.46%, 72.72%, dan 72.25%. Characterization of HAp crystalline structures was determined using XRD, characterization of HAp functional groups was determined using FTIR, characterization of mechanical properties for hardness was determined using microvickers hardness and compressive strength was determined using autograph. The XRD characterization results showed the optimum condition of HAp synthesis at 1000 °C for 2 hours. FTIR characterization results showed the functional groups OH- and PO42-. The result of characterization of mechanical properties showed that HAp-Alumina-Gelatin composite increased in hardness with the increasing of alumina concentration but decreased in compressive strength.
