Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of student trust, relationship commitment and student satisfaction on student retention. State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya students were taken as case study. Both primary and secondary data were employed. Secondary data were gathered from various sources, such as journals, books, and other related publications. Primary data were gathered using questionare which was distributed to the target respondents. Using a proportiate sampling technique, 300 responses were collected of the total 2245 sophomores. Using a structural equation modelling through Lavaan, the result showed that all hypotheses were accepted: (i) student trust affected relationship commitment, student retention, and student satisfaction; (ii) relationship commitment affected student retention; (iii) student satisfaction affected student retention; (iv) student trust affected student retention through relationship commitment as well as student satisfaction. In addition, it was also found that relationship commitment had the strongest influence to student retention. On the other hand, student satisfaction was found to have the weakest effect on student retention. Meanwhile, student trust had stronger effect on student retention through relationship commitment rather than through student trust. It is recommended to observe other variables such as coercive power and switching barriers for further research.
