Abstract

Background. Oral ulceration is the most common oral disease and suffered 20% worldwide population. In some studies, smoking habit claimed as risk factor but on other hand as inhibit factor. The aims of the study. In order to reveal the difference oral ulceration prevalence between active and passive smoker from Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) 5. Method. The data from IFLS 5 used to analysis association between smoking habit and prevalence of oral ulceration. Oral ulceration prevalence gathered from self-reported statement in a last month, and smoking habit categorized into active and passive smoker. Univariate analysis performed to describe frequency based on age, gender, education level, depression, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and food and beverage which consumed in a last week. Chi-square test as bivariate analysis performed to reveal association between dependent variables and oral ulceration. And logistic regression test as multivariate analysis performed to reveal the predictive factors of oral ulceration. Result. Prevalence of oral ulceration from IFLS 5 was 17.89 %. The dominant factors of oral ulceration were: smoking habit (pvalue=0.0000; OR=1.42; 95 % CI=1.30-1.53), age (pvalue=0.0200; OR=1.31; 95 % CI=1.04-1.64), depression (pvalue=0.0000; OR=1.68; 95 % CI=1.54-1.83), diabetes mellitus (pvalue=0.0430; OR=2.16; 95 % CI=1.02-4.57), instant noodle (pvalue=0.0000; OR=1.29; 95 % CI=1.18-1.41), carbonated drink (pvalue=0.0000; OR=1.43; 95 % CI=1.29-1.57), spicy food (pvalue=0.0150; OR=1.14; 95 % CI=1.03-1.27), dan fried food (pvalue=0.0000; OR=1.21; 95 % CI=1.11-1.32). Conclusion. Prevalence of oral ulceration in Indonesian population was 17.89 %. There was association between oral ulceration prevalence and smoking habit from IFLS 5.
