Abstract

Background: Oral candidiasis is an oral infection caused by Candida albicans which can be prevented by maintaining oral hygiene. The combination of herbal ingredients and toothpaste produces a synergistic therapeutic effect. Gambier extract (Uncaria gambir ROXB) is reported to contain catechins and tannins which have antifungal effects. The purpose of this study was to determine the antifungal effect and the synergy of the ingredients in gambier 10% toothpaste against Candida albicans. Methods: A true experimental laboratory study with a post-test-only design group was established and the tested groups were divided into four groups, namely gambier extract 10% toothpaste, the combination of gambier extract 10% and fluoride 0.0048% toothpaste, fluoride 0.0048% toothpaste and placebo toothpaste. Gambier extract was obtained by the soxhletation method. The separation of the solvent from the extract was carried out by the distillation method. Agar Well method antifungal test was used to measure the inhibition zone value of tested groups. Data were analyzed using one-way Anova. Results: Inhibition test of tested groups showed that only gambier and fluoride toothpaste was effective in inhibiting Candida albicans with an average inhibition zone value of 8.35 mm. Conclusion: Gambier toothpaste with a concentration of 10% had no antifungal effect against Candida albicans and toothpaste with a combination of gambier extract 10% and fluoride 0,0048% had antifungal effect against Candida albicans.
