Abstract

Background: The main goal of endodontic treatment is to remove vital tissue, necrotic tissue, microorganisms, and microorganism products from the root canal system. Irrigation solutions such as NaOCl and CHX are needed to achieve these goals, unfortunately, both solutions have unwanted side effects, therefore alternative solutions are required that can come from plant extracts because they have antibacterial properties, low cytotoxic effects, and easy to obtain. One of the plant extracts that can use as an alternative irrigation solution is 20% turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizome extract because it has antibacterial properties and can dissolve the smear layer. However, C. longa contains a colorant called curcumin, which can cause discoloration on the root canal dentin. Aims: To determine the influence of 20% turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizome extract on the root canal dentin discoloration. Material and Methods: This study was an in vitro experimental study. The treatment group used 20% C. longa rhizome extract, while the positive control group used 5.25% NaOCl and 2% CHX, and the negative control group used distilled water. The root canal dentin discoloration was measured based on the dE*ab value. Measurements were using a UV Vis 2401 PC spectrophotometer. The data obtained were analyzed using the One Way ANOVA test and Post Hoc Games Howell test. Results: 20% C. longa rhizome extract had a higher mean dE*ab value than the 5.25% NaOCl and 2% CHX group, and there was no significant difference between them. Distilled water had the smallest dE*ab value and didn’t cause discoloration on the root canal dentin. Conclusion: There is an influence of 20% turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizome extract on the root canal dentin discoloration.
