Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out how the media relations strategies are implemented in establishing relations with the media by the South Sumatra Regional Police (POLDA) and the relationship created between PR and the media. This research use descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection techniques are carried out through in-depth interviewa, observation, and collecting documentation as well as collecting visual materials. An important finding of this study is that the South Sumatra Police Public Relations Division has carried out astrategy media relations in accordance with Yosal Iriantara’s theory, namely managing relationships, developing strategies, and developing networks as an effort to improve image in handling demonstrations in cases of rejection of the 2020 Omnibus Law. The strategy media relations implemented by the Public Relations POLDA South Sumatra is consired appropriate and good. The Public Relations department as a one-stop information center that has been working optimally, the competence of the ranks of public relations in providing material is good, journalists who are involved in covering activities in the field during the action, as well as good coordination between the PR sector and other work units in terms of provide valid and accurate information. The model in the relationship created refers to Grunig’s opinion, which is a model of mutually beneficial relationship between one another (mutualisme), that is the mixed asymmetric-symmetric model.
