Abstract

Background: Root canal preparation produced a layer called smear layer. Irrigant solution used to eliminate microorganism, debris, and smear layer. Lemon (Citrus limon) peel is one of natural resources that has active compounds to eliminate smear layer from root canal. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of lemon peel (Citrus limon) extract 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% as final root canal treatment irrigant. Method: This quasi-experimental study used 30 first mandible premolar that was divided into 6 groups. The crown was cut to CEJ and a working length of 12mm was left. Root canal preparation used crown down technique, with initial irrigation of NaOCl 5,25%. Final irrigation was carried out based on treatment group, namely lemon peel (Citrus limon) extract 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, EDTA 17%, and aquadest. Root canal was dried using paper point, then was saved in incubator. Samples were cut in bucco-lingual direction, then was observed using measuring microscope with 1000x magnification. Torabinejad scale was used to measure the level of root canal cleanliness. Kolmogorov-smirnov and Mann-Whitney test was used to analyze the data. Result: There was significant differencesbetween all groups (p<0,05). Based on median and mean value, lemon peel (Citrus limon) extract 10% was the most effective to clean the root canal compared to other concentrations. Conclusion: There was differences in effectiveness of lemon peel (Citrus limon) extract 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% as final root canal treatment irrigant. Lemon peel (Citrus limon) extract 10% was the most effective to clean smear layer from the root canal.
