Abstract

Traditional gold mining uses mercury as a separating process between gold and ore. Continuous mercury exposure can cause high levels of mercury in a person's body which can cause health problems such as eye, digestive, respiratory, and skin disorders. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on the factors that affect mercury levels in hair of traditional gold mining workers. This research is a quantitative study with a cross sectional design approach. The sample in this study using total sampling. Data were analyzed using SPSS with correlation test and Independent T Test. The results of the analysis stated that the highest level of mercury in the hair of gold mine workers 4,950 mg/kg and the results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between work duration P-value 0.023, personal hygiene P-value 0.006, type of work activity P-value 0.016 with levels of mercury in the hair of traditional gold mine workers, while in the BMI variable and the use of hair dye there was no relationship between mercury levels in the hair of traditional gold mine workers in Sukamenang Village, Muratara Regency. The conclusion of this study, the factors associated with high levels of mercury in the hair of workers are the length of work, personal hygiene, and the type of work activity.
