Abstract

Most mothers in Indonesia feel happy if their toddlers are fat because they have a perception that fat toddlers are healthy toddlers. This misperception is still often encountered, including in the mothers of toddlers in Palembang City. One of the causes of overweight in toddlers is follow-up formula feeding. Mother’s education and occupation, also mass media exposure are various factors that influence the mother's perception of follow-up formula feeding. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between mother’s perception of follow-up formula feeding and overweight with follow-up formula feeding for toddlers aged 2-5 years. This research is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used was cluster-random sampling and purposive sampling. The research sample was mothers from four districts representing Palembang City, which is Plaju District, Ilir Timur I District, Kertapati District, and Sako District with 84 respondents. The number of samples calculated with the hypothesis test for two population proportions formula. Data analysis was done by univariate, bivariate, and multivariate methods. The bivariate analysis that used in this study was the Chi-Square test and alternative test Fisher's Exact, and the multivariate analysis was done by Logistic Regression. The results of this study indicate that mother’s perception variables (p-value= 0.037, 95% CI = 1.321 (1.038-1.682) and mass media exposure (p-value= 0.031, 95% CI = 1.356 (1.024-1.794) are related to follow-up formula feeding. While the mother’s education and occupation variables are not related to follow-up formula feeding but still a protective factor. Based on the research results, the nutrition section of the Puskesmas are expected to socialize the mothers further about the good and bad aspects of follow-up formula feeding, also the causes and the impact of overweight on toddlers. Likewise, the mothers are expected to increase knowledge and understanding of follow-up formula feeding, also the information about the causes of overweight on toddlers aged 2-5 years and the impacts that can occur at current and future ages. So there is no more misperception in the future.
