Abstract
ISOLATION OF SECONDARY METABOLITES FROM Ludwigia peruviana LEAVES AND IT’S ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY Patrick Ahad: Advised by Dr. Ferlinahayati, M.Si and Dr. Eliza, M.Si. Departement of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathemathics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya University XI + 62 pages, 22 pictures, 12 tables, 9 atachements The isolation of secondary metabolites from Ludwigia peruvina leaves along with its antibacterial activity had been done. The isolation started with maceration of dried L. peruviana leaves using methanol as the solvent, then continued with liquid-liquid partition with n-hexane and ethyl acetate. The partition yielded n-hexane fraction which then further separated using vacuum liquid chromatography and gravity column chromatography. The isolation and purification yielded 16,3 mg of white oil-like compound. The isolated compound structure then analyzed using IR, 13C-NMR and 1H-NMR spectrum and GC-MS. Based on the data and its comparison with literature data, its shown that the isolated compound was a mixture of terpenoid namely cycloartenol (a), 24-methylene-cycloartenol (b) and phytol (c). The antibacterial acitivity of methanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction and the isolated compound were tested using agar disc diffusion method against two strain of bacteria, Eschericia coli (ATCC 25922) and Staphylococus aureus (ATCC 25923). The results showed that methanolic extract of L. peruviana leaves, n-hexane and ethyl acetate fraction managed to inhibit S. aureus growth but, unable to inhibit E. coli growth in any concentration. The isolated compound also managed to inhibit S. aureus growth but, unable to inhibit E. coli growth. From the results, its shown that methanolic extract of L. peruviana have antibacterial properties toward gram positive bacteria, S. aureus as well as the both fractions and the isolated compounds.
