Abstract

Pepper plants are one of the spices that have a lot of demand, because pepper has various benefits, one of which can relieve a stuffy nose. This study aims to determine the effect of Mg fertilizer on soil pH, soil and plant Mg and growth of pepper shrubs (Piper albi L.) in floating farming systems. This research was conducted at the Pond and the Physics and Soil Conservation Laboratory as well as the Chemistry, Biology and Soil Fertility Laboratory, Department of Soil, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. This research was conducted in October 2020. This study used a randomized block design method with one factor and four groups, the factor being tested was Mg fertilizer with a dose per polybag as follows: Mg0 = No Mg fertilizer, Mg1 = 4 g/plant, Mg2 = 8 g/plant, Mg3 = 12 g/plant, and Mg4 = 16 g/plant. The results showed that magnesium (kieserite) fertilizer treatment had a significant effect on soil pH and magnesium (kieserite) fertilizer also significantly increased soil Mg. However, it had no significant effect on plant Mg and growth (height, number of leaves and root system) of pepper shrubs. Treatment of magnesium (kieserite) fertilizer at a dose of 4 g/plant was the best dose for soil pH, which was 7.56. While the treatment of magnesium fertilizer (kieserite) with a dose of 16 g/plant, namely 2.51 gave the best dose of soil Mg.
