Abstract

ABSTRACT ANTI-CHOLESTEROL ACTIVITIES OF KAYU KUNING LEAVES ETHANOL EXTRACT (Arcangelisia flava) IN VITRO (Bramantyo Dwi Handjono, July 2021. 76 pages) Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University Background. Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The first line treatment for hypercholesterolemia is using statins, but statins have some side effects if taken in a long term. Therefore, an alternative treatment for hypercholesterolemia is needed, namely using medicinal plants, one of them is kayu kuning which is proven to have many health benefits. This study aims to determine the activity of the ethanol extract of kayu kuning (Archangelisia flava) leaves as an anticholesterol. Method. This study is an experimental in vitro laboratory study with a posttest only control group design. The object of this research was the ethanol extract of kayu kuning (Arcangelisia flava) leaves with concentrations of 300 ppm, 600 ppm, and 1200 ppm. Testing of anticholesterol activity using the Liebermann-Burchard method combined with spectrophotometry. Research data in the form of absorbance value of cholesterol solution and sample solution used to obtain value of percentage reduction in cholesterol levels which were then analyzed by simple linear regression to obtain the IC50 value. Results. The largest percentage decrease was achieved at a concentration of 1200 ppm (40.677%) followed by a concentration of 600 ppm (28,81%) and a concentration of 300 ppm (24,93%). From the results of linear regression obtained the equation of the line: y = 0,0178x + 19,007 with an IC50 value of 1.741,18 ppm. Discussion. The ethanol extract of kayu kuning leaves contains flavonoid, tannin, and triterpenoid active substances that can bind directly to cholesterol so that it can reduce cholesterol levels. Conclusion. The ethanol extract of the leaves of the kayu kuning has activity as an anticholesterol. Keyword: Kayu kuning leaves, Arcangelisia flava, anticholesterol, in vitro
