Abstract
Background: Streptococcus mutans is the main bacteria found in dental plaque. Dental plaque can be controlled by using toothpaste. The combination of herbal ingredients and toothpaste can deliver complementary effects. Gambier extract (Uncaria gambir Roxb.) was reported to contain catechin and tannin which act as antibacterial. The objective of this research was to determine the antibacterial potency of gambier toothpaste and fluoride toothpaste with addition of gambier extract against Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Methods: This research was an in vitro laboratory experimental study and divided into four groups namely gambier toothpaste, combination of fluoride and gambier toothpaste, fluoride toothpaste and placebo toothpaste. The antibacterial potency test was used disc diffusion method to measure the inhibitory zone value of toothpaste. Data were analyzed using One-Way Anova test and Post-Hoc Tukey test. Results: The average of inhibiton zone value formed around gambier toothpaste was 9.13 mm. Those average tended to be higher than placebo toothpaste, but the difference was not statistically significant. The highest average of inhibition zone value was the toothpaste composed by fluoride and gambier with 11.23 mm, those toothpaste had significant differences to gambier toothpaste, fluoride toothpaste, and placebo toothpaste. Conclusion: The gambier toothpaste had moderate antibacterial potency and fluoride toothpaste with addition of gambier extract had synergistic strong antibacterial potency.
