Abstract

Breadfruit leaf contains secondary metabolites of flavonoids, tannins, and alkaloids. The purpose of this research is to determine the gastroprotective effect of the ethanol extract in breadfruit leaf (Artocarpus altilis (Parkinson) Fosberg) on the evaluation parameters of gastric mucosal lesions, fiber volume, pH, and total acidity of gastric contents. Wistar strained male white rats were divided into 6 groups, such as normal group, positive control (Omeprazole 20 mg / kgBW), negative control (NaCMC 0.5%), treatment I (Extract 100 mg / kgBB), treatment II ( Extract 200 mg / kgBB), and treatment III (Extract 400 mg / kgBB). The rats were treated with omeprazole and ethanol extract of breadfruit leaf for 14 days, then absolute ethanol induction was carried out on the 15th day. The total of flavonoid contained in the breadfruit leaf extract was 92.476 mgQE / g extract with a percentage of 9.2476%. The results showed that the ethanol extract of breadfruit leaf was able to provide protection against the stomach of rats where there was a significant difference compared to the negative control (p <0.05). Based on the evaluation parameters of gastric mucosal lesions, fiber volume, pH, and total acidity of the stomach contents, the most effective dose of gastroprotection is breadfruit leaf ethanol extract at a dose of 400 mg / kgBB. The higher the extract dose was, the more effective gastroprotective effect seen. This was shown by less lesions, increased pH, decreased gastric volume and total acidity, also the state of the gastric mucosa.
