Abstract

Introduction: Tooth enamel is the hardest tissue because of its high mineral content. Minerals in the enamel can undergo demineralization. Demineralization is a process of dissolution of hydroxyapatite crystals when the pH of saliva is below 5.5. Aim: Determine whether there was a different effect between toothpaste containing novamin and hydroxyapatite on enamel hardness. Methods: Thirty-six crowns of upper and lower premolars were divided into three groups consisting of a group that was soaked in artificial saliva (Group A), a group that was applied novamin toothpaste (Group B), and a group that was applied hydroxyapatite toothpaste (Group C). The Vickers Hardness Tester was used to measure enamel hardness before treatment, after demineralization, and after remineralization. Result: One Way ANOVA test results showed a significant difference in increasing the enamel hardness after remineralization between all groups. Post Hoc Bonferroni test results showed no significant difference in the increase in enamel hardness between the novamin toothpaste group (Group B) and the hydroxyapatite toothpaste group (Group C). Conclusion: There was no different effect between novamin toothpaste and hydroxyapatite toothpaste on enamel hardness.
