Abstract

Background: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that attacks the respiratory tract which can be diagnosed and suspected if there is cough, wheezing and shortness of breath. People with asthma usually use the ICS class to control the onset of asthma symptoms. Antiasthamtic medication (salmeterol/fluticasone propionate) (ICS/LABA) contain hydroxynapthoic acid. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of antiasthmatic medication (salmeterol and fluticasone propionate) on the surface roughness of nanofill composite resin. Materials and Methods: This study used a nanofill composite resin specimen with a diameter 10mm and height 2mm. This research is a quasi-experimental research with pretest and post-test research design with control group. The experimental group was exposed by antiasthmatic medication for 7 days and then immersed in artificial saliva while the control group was only immersed in artificial saliva. The effect on the surface roughness between groups was analyzed using the Mann Whitney test and the effect on the surface roughness before and after treatment was analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: The average surface roughness measurement for the pretest experimental group was 1.256±0.725 and the post-test was 1.391±0.685, while the average measurement result for the pretest control group was 1.378±1.017 and the post-test was 1.487±0.791. The results of the Mann Whitney test showed a significance result of 0.930, which means there was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. The results of the Wilcoxon test for the experimental group showed a significance result of 0.005 and for the control group 0.048, which means that there was a significant difference between before and after treatment. Conclusion: Antiasthmatic medication (salmeterol and fluticasone propionate) can increase the surface roughness of the nanofill composite resin.
